Here are five tips to help high school students at Central High School in Philadelphia, PA prepare for donating blood during the school day:
- Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water before donating to keep your blood volume up and prevent dizziness. Avoid caffeinated drinks, as they can dehydrate you.
- Eat a Healthy Meal – Have a balanced meal rich in iron and protein before your donation. Foods like spinach, eggs, lean meats, and beans can help maintain healthy iron levels. Avoid fatty foods, as they can affect the quality of your donation.
- Get a Good Night’s Sleep – Rest well the night before to ensure your body is in the best condition for donation. Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep to help prevent feeling lightheaded afterward.
- Bring Identification & Permission – If you’re under 18, you may need parental consent to donate blood. Bring a valid photo ID (such as a school ID or driver’s license) to verify your eligibility.
- Dress Comfortably & Plan Your Day – Wear a short-sleeved shirt or one with sleeves that can be easily rolled up. Plan your school schedule accordingly, as you may want to avoid intense physical activity right after donating.
By following these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to give blood safely and make a positive impact in your community! 🚑💉❤️
